Types of Intellectual Property
Intellectual property is the term that is used to describe any type of original creation from the mind. There are many different types of creations that can be classified as being intellectual property. Some major examples of intellectual property include art, music, and literature.
Every piece of recognized content and every marketed product have spurred from an original creation in the mind. If someone were to write a poem, book, or publish a magazine then the content would be copyrighted to protect it. If a company invents a device then they would want to patent it. That same company would also likely create a trademark for the device so that it can be marketed under that brand name.
Intellectual property is often broken down into three different types of properties based on the protection methods for them. These types of intellectual properties include copyright, trademark, and patent. One other well-known type of intellectual property would be trade secrets.
Copyright
A copyright is used on some of the more direct types of intellectual properties. These would be creations that are usually created by the mind and skills of the individual. A few major examples of copyrighted intellectual properties would include music, art, and literature.
Trademark
A trademark is used for devices, logos, slogans, and other visuals that are attributed to a specific company. Registering the trademark works essentially as a brand name for the company's products, logos, and other forms of intellectual property. Trademarks help to identify products by brand and can be used for marketing purposes as well. This also allows companies to sell various types of products under separate relevant brand names.
Patent
A patent is used to put full rights of inventions to the rightful creator. This is used for actual inventions and is not intended for art or literature. There are many examples of creations that can be patented such as machines and innovative biology findings.
Trade Secrets
Trade secrets consist of any type of business methods or informational pieces that are used by that business to prosper in their specialized field. This can include designs, recipes, marketing techniques, and much more. The documents that contain trade secrets are often safely stored. Many larger businesses will opt to storing the trade secrets in a safety deposit box at a bank so they cannot be stolen. There is little legal control over this type of intellectual property so keeping them safe is very important.
This has covered all of the common types of intellectual property. There are still other things that could be categorized as intellectual property as well. It is pretty straightforward as to what intellectual property consists of. Basically, it is just any unique creation from the mind.
You can find many examples of protected intellectual property every day by just looking at pieces of art, literature, and commerce. Protecting your intellectual property is very important so that you receive full credit for your work and creations. This allows you to fully profit from it as well. In the end, it will be very important that any inventor, artist, writer, business, and so on, educates themselves on intellectual property and how it should be protected.
