Film piracy is a form of stealing. There is no way to work around that statement. It is just like stealing a car, or an even better example: movie piracy is just like going into a store and stealing a DVD. If you wanted to support the film industry then stealing an actual copy of the DVD would be more beneficial for the people behind the film.
In all honesty, film piracy is a serious crime that many people neglect to educate themselves on. You may not be aware that film piracy has serious negative effects on the film industry, your film watching experience, and can lead to severe consequences if you are caught for it. Many people have already been prosecuted, and even imprisoned, for committing film piracy.
It should be pretty obvious why film piracy is a crime. You are stealing the creative content that is already copyrighted. This is also known as copyright infringement, which would be one of the major legal terms used to describe film piracy.
Some people, or groups of people, that pirate films will do so to resell them. This means that the creativity that is copyrighted is stolen and profited by individuals that did not put their effort into the project. Not only is this blatantly illegal but it is completely immoral and unethical as well.
You do not have to be reproducing and selling the pirated content in order for it to be a crime. Just by downloading or watching a movie illegally you are committing the crime of film piracy. There are many resources available online for you to watch and download movies. It may seem like you will not get caught for watching or downloading movies illegally. However, there is a recent case involving over 20,000 torrent program users that are being sued for illegally downloading a few select movies.
It is very difficult for authorities to keep track of everyone that is breaking the film piracy laws. This would be because there are hundreds of millions of people in the world that break these laws. It would be impossible for there to be full legal control over this issue as it already such a huge problem. There are more and more cases every year of individuals being fined, charged, and even imprisoned for film piracy.
Just for the fact that film piracy is a crime, you should avoid doing it completely. All you have to do is spare a few dollars to rent or buy a movie on DVD. The video quality will be much better, you will be supporting the people behind the film, and you will not be breaking the law even if you have a lawsuit settlement lawyer. If you do not want to wait for the movie to come out on DVD then just spare $10 and go watch the movie at the cinemas, simple as that!
Film piracy is really a serious issue. You should take the time to educate yourself on it and the laws behind copyright infringement. You will want to avoid committing this crime completely but not just for the fact that it is a law.
